Recertifying Your SNAP Benefits on October 2025

If your SNAP certification period ends in October 2025, yes—renew now to avoid a gap in your food benefits.

Here’s a simple guide to what SNAP recertification is, why it matters, and how to do it on time.

What recertification means

Recertification is how you confirm you still meet SNAP rules, like income, assets, and household size. States are required to stop benefits after your certification period unless you recertify.

Your situation may change (income, household members), and program rules can change too. Recertification makes sure you get the correct benefit amount.

When to expect your notice

You can expect your SNAP recertification notice one month before your benefits end. Your state sends a Notice of Expiration with instructions.

If your period ends in October 2025, you may have received the notice in September 2025 (by mail, phone, email, or more than one way).

If you received your notice this month, then you can recertify by November 2025. Act quickly after you receive it. If you wait, your benefits may lapse.

What to do step by step

1. Complete and return your recertification form

  • Some states ask you to report changes only; others use a short form. You’ll usually need to confirm:
    • Who lives in your household
    • All sources of income (wages, Social Security, pensions, disability, etc.)
    • Your monthly costs (rent/mortgage and utilities, dependent care, medical expenses)
  • You can usually submit online, by mail, or in person. Follow your notice for instructions.

2. Complete your interview (if required)

  • The interview confirms the information on your form.
  • Your local SNAP office must schedule it at least 11 days before your benefits expire.
  • Keep your appointment to avoid delays.
  • Streamlined option: As of June 2024, 23 states may waive interviews for households where everyone is age 60 or older. If that’s you, you may only need to return your form and documents on time.

3. Send any follow-up documents

  • If the office asks for more proof (like pay stubs or bills), send it by the deadline. This helps prevent a break in benefits.

Timing and decisions

  • If you submit everything on time, most offices make a decision in about two weeks.
  • If you disagree with the decision, you have the right to appeal.

Can I recertify online?

Many states let you recertify online. Check your notice or contact your local SNAP office to confirm.

What if I miss the deadline?

Your benefits can stop. You can reapply, but it’s usually easier and faster to recertify before they end.
